В принципе Past Perfect Continuous — это прошедшая форма Present Perfect Continuous. А конкретнее — действие происходило в течение какого-то времени (обычно известного) до какого-то "опорного" действия, выраженного Past Simple. А Past Continuous — это действие длящееся (еще не кончившееся) в какой-то то момент в прошлом, но когда оно началось — нам по барабану. Главное оно продолжалось в тот момент. Сравни два примера. Если их неправильно перевести, то можно переврать их смысл.

1. When I looked out of the window, it had been raining.

2. When I looked out of the window, it was raining.

В первом предложении человек выглянул в окно и увидел, что дождь шел, но уже закончился (наверное, увидел лужи, мокрых кошек и яркое солнце и понял причину, почему кошки мокрые и откуда лужи на дороге).

Во втором, человек выглянул в окно и увидел, что дождь идет (капли барабанят по мостовой, люди бегают с зонтами, то есть, дождь в процессе в момент выглядывания).

 

Упражнение. Поставь глаголы в скобках в нужную форму — Past Continuous или Past Perfect Continuous.

1) Tom was sitting on the chair, out of breath. He had been running (run).

2) I tried to catch Tom but I couldn’t. He was running (run) very fast.
